About SonAir

Created by Sonangol on October 10th, 1979 with the aim of supporting oil activity with air transport.

Thus, in October 1979 the Sonangol [DAR] Aeronautics Division , was established, attached to the Department of Studies and Projects [DEP]which was under the responsibility of the eputy General Directorate for Hydrocarbons [DGAH].

Also in the early days of the Aeronautics Division, the first aircraft of the Dakota DC-3, type was acquired,  and the first Alouette III SA 316 B.


At the same time, the first service agreement with the TEXACO customer was also signed.


However, on 30th September 1985, DAR evolved from Division to Managment.


With the large-scale expansion of oil exploration in Angola, SonAir Serviço Aéreo, SARL, was formed by Sonangol on February 16th, 1998  as a Subsidiary of Sonangol, which later became SonAir Serviço Aéreo, S.A., with 100% state-owned Sonair, 96.816% owned by Sonangol E.P. and 3.184% owned by Sonangol Holdings.


SonAir is certified by the National Institute of Civil Aviation – INAVIC, quality of Air Operator for the transport of passengers in non-scheduled service.

The workforce today is made up of a 824 workers.

As of 2008 diversification of the fleet was being reduced in order to improve asset management and reduce operating costs.
